Hedgerow Dungarees

This is the Hedgerow Dungarees by Twig and Tale Patterns. I first came across this NZ based (yay for local!) pattern company when they released their neat face mask pattern for free during the pandemic. They had a lovely shaped facemask design and the instructions for sewing them were great.

I recently made their also free Sunny Hat and was again struck by how clever the instructions were, loads of neat little tips and tricks.

So when they had a call for their sew and show for their new Hedgerow dungarees I jumped at the chance. I was looking for overall patterns for my baby now that she is starting to be a bit more mobile, and the thought of being able to make a matching pair of overalls for the two of us was too cute to pass up!

You guys I LOVE these overalls so much. I've never been much of an overalls person (toileting practicalities) but the cuteness of these ones make them totally worth it! (And having worn them a few times can confirm toileting not actually that bad. The cross straps coupled with elastic waistband means you can slide the straps off without having to unbutton them, but they stay put and don't slip off annoyingly otherwise).

As expected from Twig and Tale the finishes on this pair of overalls are incredibly neat. The instructions were detailed and also comes with a video to help visualize the slightly trickier steps. I usually consider myself a confident beginner and found this pattern held my hand nicely through the making of these dungarees.

At the moment postpartum my measurements put my hip size at C, but my waist at F. The pattern suggested sizing up if there's more than 2 size difference between waist and hips, but I found when I toiled a D there was plenty of room so ended up making a size C. Even then I was able to take an extra 1cm off the side of the hips (I think the pleated version may be a bit roomier in the hips.)

Their patterns are drafted for 165cm - I found I needed to take 6cm off the bottom length of the overalls, but didn't need to take any length off the rise (I originally tried in the toile but found actually the drafted rise was perfect).

I also didn't size down the bib portion as my chest measurement currently is two sizes up from size C (the wonders of breastfeeding! 😆) so the extra height of the bib accommodated for this. I did find the straps were too long though and I could have taken around 5cm off those. (I didn't toile the top so at the end I simply turned and sewed up the excess strap length after the buttonhole)

Check out these utterly adorable wooden buttons that came in a big and small version so my baby's dungarees and mine can have matching buttons!

The fabric is this beautiful brushed cotton twill from The Fabric Store. Its super soft and feels like wearing PJs. The little starburst dots are printed on and I was delighted to find they were printed beautifully on grain (always a risk when buying printed pattern fabric!).

I added some lace detailing and tried my best to match the pockets!

Will post detail's of my bubba's make once they are released.

Note I received this pattern for free as part of their sew and show, though opinions and my love for this pattern purely my own.

We had a fun photoshoot at the local reserve so here are the rest of the photospam!
